I'm off to Guatemala! I will be serving outside of Antigua for 8 days with my youth group alongside an amazing organization called Mission Impact. I am brimming with anticipation.
I am SO excited to reconnect with a fellow Santa Barbaran whom I like a lot and happens to be living there for the next year. :)
As I leave I am trying to adapt a servants attitude and a flexible spirit and really soften my heart to what God has to reveal to us while we're down there. My brother actually sent my this in response to his Cultural Anthropology class and I thought it was totally relevant to going to Guatemala:
Cultural Relatavism: the principle that an individual human's beliefs and activities should be understood in terms of his or her own culture.
Judging cultures on their own terms: the principle that people should not judge the behavior of others using the standards of their own culture, and that each culture must be analyzed on its own terms.

Enthnocentrism: the tendency to believe that one's ethnic or cultural group is centrally important, and that all other groups are measured in relation to one's own.
I'm realizing, as we go to serve the poor, just how poor I am as well. In all the brokenness that I have been preparing to see, my gaze has also shifted inward and I've started to realize my own brokenness. I'm not expecting to be completely made whole when I go down there, just like I'm not expecting to resolve every problem in Guatemala. I do anticipate, however, a great time for fellowship, service and amazing time growing deeper in my relationship with God.
Psalm 8:3-9
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?
Yet you have made him a little lower than that heavenly beings
and crowned him with glory and honor.
You have given him dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
O LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
