Missed Connection

Looking for a fixie girl. - m4w - 25 (SB)

Date: 2010-01-28, 3:51PM PST
Sadly, some of my best female friends have moved away recently and I’m looking for a fixie girl to fill the emptiness in my day. Preferably, you will be young , semi attractive and ride a fixed gear. If you ride a road bike and are willing to consider riding a fixed gear in the near future, or if you have never ridden a bike before but the word “fixie” or “fixed gear” intrigues you, we might be able to work something out, I’m flexible. If you frequent coffee shops, have a highly developed taste for the indie music scene or loll around book stores then you might be the girl for me. A short attention span would be ideal and the tendency to be aloof is exactly one of the qualities I’m after, think Zooey Deschanel. I highly value sarcasm and quirkiness. If you have an affinity for brightly colored objects or collect random knickknacks, that is a plus. If you name happens to be Katie or it ends in -ie or –y I will move you to the top of my list. Where are you fixie girl?

Weirdest thing ever right? Has anyone else had this happen to them? My friend Shelby called me a few weeks ago and told me about this missed connection on craigslist and I freaked out. One of those serendipitous things that was either a really good joke or a tickle of coincidence..

In the spirit of valentine's day

I just saw the movie "Valentine's Day" with my sister and some friends and although it did not soar to the top of my list of favorites it did get me thinking a little bit about love. While I'm usually your resident cynic about this topic, I do like the idea of one day having February 14 be a day that I actually look forward to. I find that in the case of love, it's best to look to the best and follow their example.

John Keats to Fanny Brawne:

My dearest Girl,

I wish you could invent some means to make me at all happy without you. Every hour I am more concentrated in you; every thing else tastes like chaff in my Mouth. I feel it almost impossible to go to Italy - the fact is I cannot leave you, and shall never taste one minute’s content until it pleases chance to let me live with you for good. But I will not go on at this rate. A person in health as you are can have no conception of the horrors that nerves and a temper like mine go through. What Island do your friends propose retiring to? I should be happy to go with you there alone, but in company I should object to it; the backbitings and jealousies of new colonists who have nothing else to amuse themselves, is unbearable. Mr. Dilke came to see me yesterday, and gave me a very great deal more pain than pleasure. I shall never be able any more to endure to for the society of any of those who used to meet at Elm Cottage and Wentorth Place. The last two years taste like brass upon my Palate. If I cannot live with you I will live alone. I do not think my health will improve much while I am separated from you. For all this I am averse to seeing you - I cannot bear flashes of light and return into my glooms again. I am not so unhappy with you seems such an impossibility! It requires a luckier star than mine! It will never be. I enclose a passage from one of your letters which I want you to alter a little - I want (if you will have it so) the matter expressed less coldly to me. If my health would bear it, I could write a Poem which I have in my head, which would be a consolation for people in such a situation as mine. I would show some one in Love as I am, with a person living in such Liberty as you do. Shakespeare always sums up matters in the most sovereign manner. Hamlet’s heart was full of such Misery as mine is when he said to Ophelia “go to a Nunnery, go, go” Indeed I should like to give up the matter at once - I should like to die. I am sickened at the brute world which you are smiling with. I hate men and women more. I see nothing but thorns for the future - wherever I may be next winter in Italy or nowhere Brown will be living near you with his indecencies - I see no prospect of any rest. Suppose me in Rome - well, I should there see you as in a magic glass going to and from town at all hours, - I wish you could infuse a little confidence in human nature into my heart. I cannot muster any - the world is too brutal for me - I am glad there is such a thing as the grave - I am sure I shall never have any rest till I get there At any rate I will indulge myself by never seeing any more Dilke or Brown or any of their Friends. I wish I was either in your arms full of faith or that a Thunder bolt would strike me.

God bless you

Frida Kahlo to Diego Rivera

Diego, my love,
Remember that once you finish the fresco we will be together forever once and for all, without arguments or anything, only to love one another.
Behave yourself and do everything that Emmy Lou tells you.
I adore you more than ever.
Your girl, Frida

Mmmm sun :)

It's amazing what a little fresh (albeit cold) air can do for the soul. My face is numb, my ears aching and cheeks rosy, but my heart is beating and I feel alive. After wallowing inside from 2-4 today, I summoned all of my strength and dragged my pitiable body outside into the winter chill; I am so glad that I did.
Lately I have been in limbo between a feeling of sick stagnation and zealous inspiration and it's that middle ground that has been wearing on me the most. Do you ever get that feeling? That thirst for inspiration but lack of energy to actually put it into action?
I don't really have a resolution for this post, but I guess that's okay. I'm at a weird point right now where life is good but I'm still missing something.

So this is the new year

A few things of note in my life recently:
  • I recieved an award at the beginning of January, the Harriet Miller Youth Leadership Award, which was such an honor and it's been amazing how sweet and congratulatory my friends and family have been. Link to the article here
  • I got my acceptance letter from Seattle Pacific University two weeks ago! (My first acceptance!) I went to visit January 28-31 and loved it...I'm trying not to make up my mind without hearing from other schools yet but it's quite a challenge, all I can do until the rest of the letters come is pray and hope that this is where God wants me
  • I'm taking French 101 at City College and although it's un petit dificil, especially because I'm taking Spanish 103 at the same time, I am loving challenging myself and stepping out of my comfort zone linguistically. We'll see where this takes me :)
  • I'm going to the Film Festival tonight! I get to take pictures for The King's Page, get my press pass and get some shots of Sandra Bullock! Bah!
